George Yule Prize [Postgraduate Essay Prize]
A prize is offered for the best essay written by a postgraduate in connection with the seventh biennial ANZAMEMS conference in Hobart, 2-6 December 2008. This prize was named in 2001 to commemorate the life and work of George Shaw Sandon Yule (1919-2000), Professor of Church History at Ormond College, University of Melbourne (1957-77) and Professor of Church History at the University of Aberdeen (1978-88). A special issue of Parergon (21.2 Jul 2004), prefaced by Wilfrid Prest, celebrates George Yule's contribution to British history.
Applicants are invited to submit essays in written form; the winning essay will be delivered at a special plenary session of the conference to which all delegates of the conference will be invited.
The conditions include:
Applicants must be currently enrolled postgraduate students at a university in Australia or New Zealand and proof of enrolment will be required on submission of the essay.
The essay should be no more than 3500 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography), on a topic of the writer's choice within the fields of medieval and early modern studies. Essays should be adequately footnoted and documented, and include a bibliography. The word limit applies to the written version; the version delivered at the conference should be 20 minutes in length.
Two hard copies should be submitted together with an electronic version, via email to Dr Elizabeth Freeman, School of History and Classics, University of Tasmania, Private Bag 81, Hobart, TAS, 7001 Elizabeth.Freeman@utas.edu.au and Jenna.Mead@utas.edu.au. Essays should be prepared as for publication.
The closing date for applications is 31 October 2008.
The essay will be judged by a panel consisting of the President (ex officio) and two other members of ANZAMEMS, one of whom will be either the editor or the deputy editor of Parergon.
The winner will receive a George Yule travel bursary of $500 for assistance in attending the 2008 Hobart conference as well as prize money of $500, ie a total amount of $1000. (Please note that if the winning applicant has already been awarded one of the 2008 conference's NEER-sponsored travel bursaries or ANZAMEMS-sponsored travel bursaries then the total $1000 amount of the George Yule prize will be reduced by the amount already awarded.) The winner will also receive a year's free subscription to Parergon. The winner will also receive a free ticket to the conference dinner on 5 December (or have their dinner ticket refunded if they have already paid). The prize will be presented at the conference dinner.
If the winner is currently a paid-up subscriber to Parergon then the year's free subscription will begin on the expiry of the current subscription. If the winner is resident in the conference host city then the George Yule travel bursary may be applied to other travel connected with study.
The writer of the winning essay will be encouraged to submit the paper for publication in Parergon, subject to the usual process of refereeing. Parergon is recognised as a refereed journal of international standing.
