Conference Venue
The conference will be held in the University Centre, University of Tasmania, Churchill Avenue, Sandy Bay.
Registration for the conference will take place in the University Centre foyer.
The important buildings to know are the University Centre (includes the Stanley Burbury Lecture Theatre upstairs and Lazenby's Bistro downstairs) and the Social Sciences building (this houses most of the rooms where the conference sessions will be held and a room for delegates' computer access). There will also be some sessions in the Arts Lecture Theatre.
The Morris Miller Library will be hosting an exhibition of medieval manuscripts and early printed books.
All these buildings are close to each other on campus.
For directions, see http://www.utas.edu.au/campus/campus_maps.html then click on "Buildings Map" under Sandy Bay campus, for the following buildings:
University Centre (no. 25 on map) - conference registration, and includes the Stanley Burbury theatre
Arts lecture theatre (no. 27)
Morris Miller library (no. 23)
Social Sciences building (no. 26)
University Club (listed under "Staff club", no. 18, for the conference dinner on 5 Dec).
The University Apartments (and John Fisher College, and Christ College) - (no. 47) (listed under "Student Accommodation")
Accommodation
We have sourced accommodation at a number of venues. Details can be found here.
Travel to Tasmania
Most flights are from either Melbourne or Sydney so you will need to book early to ensure a seat. The Flight Centre provides details of all airlines flying into Tasmania - http://www.flightcentre.com.au/
Currency Exchange
There are no money changing facilities at Hobart airport. You are advised to get your Australian dollars before you arrive in Hobart. Melbourne and Sydney airports do have money changing facilities. In Hobart you can get Australian dollars from banks (opening hours vary - usually Monday to Thursday 9:30am-4pm; Friday 9:30am-5pm).
Maps and Information
The conference venue is located on Churchill Avenue, Sandy Bay. Churchill Avenue is the continuation of Regent St - in other words, the southern part of Regent St changes its name and becomes Churchill Avenue.
For information on getting to the Hobart campus, go to the University campus maps web page at http://www.utas.edu.au/campus/campus_maps.html .
For a map of inner-city Hobart, click here (PDF Document)
For a map of greater Hobart, click here (PDF Document)
The conference program and abstracts will be posted on the conference web site in due course.
Transport during the Conference
Transport will be provided to the Reception at Government House and the cost is included in your registration.
A minibus will operate between the campus and accommodation at Jane Franklin and University Apartments prior to the commencement of sessions and at the end of each day. There is no charge for this service.
If you are travelling by taxi to the campus, tell the driver you are going to the University Centre at the University on Churchill Avenue.
Car and taxi travel to Hobart airport on Saturday 6 December
Please note that there will be traffic delays in Hobart on Saturday 6 December, due to a motorcycle parade. Between 2:30pm and 3:30pm no cars will be able to cross Brooker Avenue. This means that no cars will be able to go from Macqaurie St to the Tasman Highway, and this means that your trip from the University to the airport will be delayed. If you leave the University at 2pm or earlier then you will make it through the city before the parade starts, and so you can expect a normal travel time to the airport (30-35 minutes from University to airport). If you leave the University between 2pm and about 3:30pm then you will get stuck in traffic in Macquarie St in the city - the traffic will begin to clear at approximately 3:30pm, which means that you should arrive at the airport soon after 4pm. If you leave the University at 3:30pm or later, then Brooker Avenue will be open once again and so you can expect a normal travel time to the airport (30-35 minutes - but perhaps allow a little longer if you are leaving the University soon after 3:30, since there will be backed-up cars that need to be cleared.)
Taxis
Ring 13 10 08 or 13 22 27. Taxis can be booked in advance. If you need a taxi early in the morning, you should book it the day before. In the Sandy Bay shopping strip there is a taxi rank opposite the Metz Bar on the corner of Sandy Bay Road and Gregory Street.
A taxi from the airport to the city is $40-$50. A taxi from the airport to the university is about $45-$55.
Travel time to/from airport
From the airport to the city is about 20 minutes. From the airport to the university is about 35 minutes.
Buses to/from airport
Redline airporter bus - This bus meets all incoming flights at Hobart airport. You don't need to book a ticket if you are travelling from the airport to Hobart city (just jump on the bus at the airport), but you do need to book if you are travelling back to the airport. Cost is $15 one way to Hobart city (various drop-off points, including the University), and $25 return. Tell the driver you need to go to the University. The bus will drop you off at the University at bus stop 14 - from bus stop 14 you are only one minute's walk from the conference venue at the University Centre. If you need to go from the airport to the University Apartments please note that the Redline bus will not take you all the way (see instead the Southern Airport bus below) - from bus stop 14 you will still need to walk up the hill of College Rd (10 minute walk); in other words, the Redline airporter bus will take you most of the way from the airport to the University Apartments, but you will still need to walk the final part, and this final walk is very steep and is not to be recommended for everyone. All trips to the airport need to be booked in advance - see http://www.tasredline.com.au/ or telephone 1300 38 55 11.
Southern Airport bus - Will drop you off and collect you from a range of locations in Hobart (eg Hobart city, Jane Franklin Hall, University Apartments, John Fisher College). Unlike the Redline Airporter bus, the Southern Airport bus will take you right up the hill of College Rd and right to the door of the University's Accommodation Services office. Advance bookings are essential, and 2 or 3 days' notice is appreciated. For bookings telephone + 61 (0)3 6231 5080, or email <letsseeTasmania@tastel.net.au> The cost is $25 one-way from the airport to city locations, including to the university.
Local buses
Metro buses will take you from the University to the Hobart city centre, and vice versa. A one-way ticket is $2.20 (pay the driver. Drivers will provide change, but please avoid large notes). If in doubt about anything, ask the drivers - they are very helpful.
Metro buses from the city to the university - In the city centre, go to Franklin Square on the corner of Elizabeth and Macquarie streets. At Franklin Square go to bus stop O (in front of the statute of Edward VII) and then catch any bus numbered from 51 to 55 (these will all take you to the University). Get off at bus stop 14 or 15. The trip takes 10-15 minutes.
Metro buses from the university to the city - From the University Centre, cross to the other side of Churchill Avenue and wait at bus stop 15. All buses will take you into the city.
Meals
Morning Tea, Lunch and Afternoon Tea are provided on each day of the conference and are included in your conference registration fee. Delegates are free to make their own dinner arrangements.
Restaurants, Cafes and Bars
Close to the university, go to the Sandy Bay shopping strip in Sandy Bay Road. The section of Sandy Bay Road between Princes St and Queen St is the main part.
In the city, go to Salamanca Place on Castray Esplanade. Lots and lots of options here. From Salamanca it is a two-minute walk to the waterfront - sit on the docks and eat fish and chips, or else try the waterfront restaurants and bars.
In North Hobart, Elizabeth Street has lots of restaurants and cafes - not within walking distance of the university.
Recently completed Books and Theses
The conference provides a great opportunity to acknowledge the research conducted by our conference delegates over the past two years. If you have had a book published since the last ANZAMEMS conference in Adelaide in February 2007, or have completed a thesis since then, please let the conference convenors know before the conference so that they can add you to the congratulations list. During the conference there will be a short collective launch of all these books and theses where all delegates will join together in congratulating the authors. You are welcome to bring a copy of your book/thesis to the conference, and it can be placed on a special display table for the duration of the conference.
Excursions

Buses will take delegates from the University to Government House, returning after the reception through the city to the University.
Delegates may invite a partner to the reception. If you would like to attend, we will need to know by 1 October as all guests will receive individual invitations. It will not be possible to attend the reception without an invitation. Please indicate your attendance on your registration form.
Government House was built in the 1850s and is a renowned Australian example of the neo-Gothic style. Please see the Government House web site: http://www.govhouse.tas.gov.au/
Walking Tour of Battery Point, Thursday (afternoon) 4 December THIS WALK IS NOW FULL
Professor Pam Sharpe will lead this tour through Battery Point which is an historic inner-city suburb on the River Derwent, with a strong maritime history. The tour will include entry and afternoon tea served at Narryna Heritage Museum, a Georgian building constructed in 1836 and still in original condition. We will end with drinks at Pam's house, Royston Cottage. You will be within easy walking distance of Salamanca Place with its many restaurant options. Places on the tour are limited. The cost for the tour is $15.00 which includes transport by bus to the commencement of the tour. Please note that this tour takes place during the final conference paper session on Thursday afternoon, hence it means you will miss some papers. Obviously, if you book in for this tour then your own paper (whether you are presenting or chairing) will not be scheduled for this time."
Manuscripts and Early Printed Books Exhibition
The conference coincides with an exhibition of medieval manuscripts and early printed books to be held in the University’s Morris Miller Library. Further details will follow, but for an example of our holdings, please see details of the 2007 exhibition “From Manuscript to Print” at http://www.utas.edu.au/library/exhibitions/index.html. This exhibition is open for the duration of the conference.
Reception and Book Launch, Friday 5 December
There will be a reception in the Morris Miller Library to mark the manuscripts and early printed books exhibition, and also to launch the catalogue of the exhibition. The reception will commence at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at around 7:00 p.m. (immediately before the conference dinner). The Morris Miller Library and the conference dinner sites are one minute’s walk apart.
Conference Dinner, Friday 5 December
The conference dinner will be held at the University Club (on campus). The cost is a very reasonable $65.00 per head for a three course meal which includes some drinks. A cash bar will also be available. We do hope that as many delegates as possible will be able to attend. For international delegates, Tasmania is famed for its local fresh produce and wine.
Please indicate your attendance and any dietary requirements on your registration form.
